Round 4: Close Quarters

The ankhkeg spins about so that it drags its jaws in Ahmet's direction but it is stunned and does not attack.

The present position means that all but Lukas may suffer incidental damage this round (after you attack, whether the creature is dead or not). Everyone can attack, including Lukas, who applied the salve last round for (?) 4 hit points? He made it sound like that was a bad thing.

Yes, the torch went out, but I'm reasoning that Ahmet is still holding his while swinging Dilmek.

Experience for battle:

Andrej swings his mace again, looking to bash this thing into goo:

d20: 17
dmg: 7

Lukas said...

I would have preferred to keep the torch lit.

Lukas draws and throws another dart.

D20: 7

3 thrown of 20.

I'm not casting as I believe at the rate we are doing damage it will be unnecessary and wasted.

Maximillian Boii said...

Ditto with my belaying pin:

d20: 18 (16+2)
d6: 3 (1+2)

Alexis Smolensk said...

Lukas having gone and missed, Andrej kills the ankhkeg.

Ahmet succeeds in backing away and receiving no further damage, but in its death throes the ankhkeg mauls Andrej and Maximillian somewhat before dying, causing a point of damage to each.

Lukas said...

I have vials and jars! Can I collect acid blood?
I say this before we had out XP and whatnot as it might be time sensitive...

Ahmet said...

Nice work, gentlemen.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The experience has been posted on main text above as an image. Thought you might like seeing the table I use to calculate this.

Lukas said...

That is a handy chart.
I like being able to see damage dealt and received in such a handy chart.

Andrej said...

Ahh, that hit the spot.

Remind me, which tunnel did the ankheg attack from originally?

(OOC: I had devised a similar chart when I began using an XP system similar to yours Alexis. I'm afraid I'm like the other ludite RPGers you take to task on the main blog, though, and I have since abandoned running with a laptop.)

Lukas said...

Came from the top right I believe.

Andrej said...

Alexis, looking more closely at the chart shouldn't Andrej have caused at 7-13 points of damage? His first strike caused 6 and his second strike killed the ankheg with a 7.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Lukas is correct about direction.

Darn, you're right Andrej. This is one of the things I like about the players in the offline, they can watch on a screen duplicating my lap top how many points I add.

Remember, Andrej, that it isn't just my lap top that I play on, it's a lap top the players can watch me work on through the whole game.

I'll update the image ... your total damage is 11.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Fixed. I'm going to post the table from now on, so I can be double-checked regularly.

Ahmet said...

Ahmet uses his torch to relight the dropped torch and hands it to Maximillian.

Lukas said...

Congrats Maximillian, welcome to bait duty.

Can I collect parts of the Ankhkeg? Or are we not there yet Alexis?

I just want to make sure that doesn't get lost.

Andrej said...

(OOC: I saw and still see the potential utility of using the computer. I found myself interacting more with it then with the players, though, which was hurting our game. I wish I could have done both well.)

Alexis Smolensk said...

Okay, torch duration ...

Hasn't been calculated since prior to discovering the node, at which point the torches were 9 (Ahmet's) and 17 (Lukas's) minutes respectively. 2 minutes for the last 100 feet to the node, counting 3 minutes for examining bones, skulls, questions about hip bones etc. 1 minute (four rounds) for actual combat, then 6 rounds (1 more minute) for catching breath, adapting, chattering, letting adrenaline run down.

Ahmet's torch has 2 minutes left when he relights Lukas's torch ... which would have 10, except that I'm imposing a 2 minute penalty for it having gone out, drying, then being relit. 8 minutes left on that one.

Maximillian Boii said...

I take it, after I apply a healing salve:

d4: 3

Alexis Smolensk said...

(OOC: a computer & player mix just takes practice, Andrej)

You can get acid, Lukas, but there is no 'blood' ... just lymph fluid, which won't keep at all. I'll charge you a 3-minute penalty on the torches, however.

Maximillian Boii said...

If I'm correct, the ankheg came from the tunnel that slopes upwards. I suggest we follow that tunnel.

I also pick up my dagger.

Lukas said...

After prodding the fluid and noticing it wont actually keep Lukas is disappointed and does not collect any.

Maybe next time.

He will remark that if they leave this way he would like to grab a mandible should they have enough time.

Lukas said...

Oh and he suggests they travel whence the Ankhkeg came from.

Andrej said...

Agreed on both counts, Lukas.

Ahmet, would you like to fire up another torch from Untern's stash? Andrej hands Lukas another torch from his own inventory, "to be lit once yours goes out, of course."

Ahmet said...

Why not get acid, Lukas? Put it in a glass flask that we can throw at an opponent?

Ahmet gets the third of Untern's four torches and lights it, discarding the original torch as it flickers out.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The flickering out hasn't happened yet, Ahmet, but I'll presume you light the next one from the dying torch.

We can be on this thread for a bit. Where is the party going?

Andrej said...

Andrej collects his sling, putting it back into his pouch, and makes ready to follow Ahmet's lead now that the surly turk has a new torch.

Andrej said...

"Retrace the ankheg's steps, I suppose..."

Lukas said...

Because it wont keep according to Alexis.

So unless he means 'wont keep unless I put it in a jar', which I expect he would specify, it's not worth the 3 minutes.

Ahmet said...

I interpreted that to mean lymph fluid (not sure why you'd want that anyway) won't keep, but that you could collect acid.

Lukas said...

3 votes for whence the Ankhkeg came. ONWARDS TO ADVENTURE!

On the way out I can use bluelight essentially indefinitely. However if we get into a meaningful fight I cannot maintain it as any spellcasting dispels it.

Lukas said...

Ok, well if I can get acid that keeps, I will collect as much as I can in two jars.

If I cannot, we go whence the Ankhkeg came. I have no interest in wasting time on mundane waste material. However two jars of acid would be handy to have.

Maximillian Boii said...

Lukas, maybe we should save that for after we run out of torches then?

Maximillian Boii said...

err, I was too slow. I mean save the bluelight. By all means collect the acid.

Lukas said...

I figure on the way out, regardless of torch state, we can hopefully assume we 'cleared it out'. Otherwise I will be a walking light bearer (fortunately I can move it away from me and it doesn't have to stay on top of me.)

Ahmet said...

We have one new burning torch, one torch with about 10 minutes left on it, one unlit torch (from Andrej) now being carried by Lukas, and one unlit torch (from Untern) being carried by Ahmet.

Anyone else have a torch?

Can we improvise torches out of cloth, oil, and a leg bone? Untern had a flask of oil.

Andrej said...

I have one more torch in my inventory. I walked in here with three.

"You are likely to be eaten by a grue..."

Ahmet said...

Just for fun Ahmet grabs a few torch-sized, stout-looking leg bones while Lukas is gathering acid.

Once all is ready, Ahmet leads the group into the tunnel from whence the Ankheg came.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Must be a torch. Accept no substitutes. I must argue that for a torch to deliver the light that it does, and last for more than perhaps two to three minutes, it must be carefully constructed from the exact right materials.

Maximillian Boii said...

While Lukas is gathering acid, and Ahmet's gathering bones, I poke around in the debris for anything interesting. When we're ready to move on, I'll follow along at the back of the group again.

Ahmet said...

From his mining days Ahmet remembers how short-lived impromptu torches last. He gives up on gathering bones and prepares to lead the group out when all is ready.

Alexis Smolensk said...

You find yourself going up slope for about two rounds, then turning a corner and climbing a twenty foot slope for four more. This leads you to a chamber with no exits, where the air is still and a bit fetid. The chamber is about twenty feet in diameter and six feet high. There is a nest of moss-like material, and a corpse in the room - apparently of another ankhkeg, bigger than the one you killed. It is about 12 feet long, a couple feet thicker than the one now lying out in the node, and degraded to dry carapace and exoskeleton.

Around the exoskeleton's thorax is a silver chain with a gold medallion, featuring an image of a rhomboid pillar (thick base) with a four pointed star blazing atop it. The chain seems to have no clasp, but would have to have been pulled over the head of the skelton or somehow welded around it (though you see no places where the metal could be joined).

Wrapped around the forward lobster-like arm of the exoskeleton are dried straps that secure a tubular case to the creature's body. The case is laying parallel to the exoskeleton's arm. It is about 14 inches long, three inches thick and brownish-black in color. The lid seems to simply fit over the top.

Andrej said...

Do any of us recognize anything significant about the pillar and star symbols? They sound vaguely like freemason or templar images.

The tubular case sounds like a scroll case. Can the straps be undone? If so, Andrej will remove the case from the carapace.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The straps can simply be unwound. The pillar and star are quite different in shape from freemasonry symbols.

Andrej said...

Andrej unwinds the straps and opens the case to see what is inside.

A Templar cross can sometimes appear like a 4-pointed star... does this appear anything like that and would Andrej even know one if he saw it?

Lukas said...

Do not point the case at your face during opening.

That is all.

Andrej said...

Upon further research, I am thinking about a maltese cross.

http://www.orderstjohn.org/osj/cross.htm

Lukas said...

If I had to guess I would aim more towards a Greek reference, something like Mount Olympus and shining god at the top or something.

Andrej said...

It's a very reasonable and informed guess, Lukas.

Alexis Smolensk said...

More like this.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Without the Christmas reference, I might add!

Ahmet said...

While the learned members of the party are exploring the corpse, Ahmet guards the only entrance.

Lukas said...

Let's search the nest for anything not obvious, and ensure there's no other nooks in the room with anything else.

Since we haven't explicitly said so yet.

Also, what was the conclusion on the acid Alexis? Not usable after extraction? Sounds like that was the case.

Lukas said...

Oh, and I do the above searching.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The acid could be extracted, and will stand up ... but it is an enzyme, so it will quickly eat itself and lose its potency as 'acid.' You know of no specific use for it regarding spell or item creation.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Keeping in mind that any intrinsic search of the room will burn torchlight, a three-minute search seems to cover the whole room thoroughly and turns up nothing I haven't already mentioned.

Ahmet said...

Perhaps the chain was put on the ankhkeg when it was a puppy (ankhkeglette?).

I suppose it wouldn't be too difficult to smash the carapace if we want to remove it.

Lukas said...

I'm for smashing it off the carapace.

I assume that can be done while I'm searching the area.

Alexis Smolensk said...

It will take a fair-sized hammer, or Andrej's mace, and time, but it can be done Lukas. Do you do that?

Lukas said...

I mean I assume that someone can do it while I search the area.

I was simply putting my vote in for a smash and grab.

Ahmet said...

Would it appear to be easier to cut the chain than smash the carapace?

Lukas said...

My worry is, if magic, will chain cutting damage or destroy it?

Andrej said...

I vote smash vs. cut, and offer my mace up to anybody who wants to try it while I look into the case. If you rather I smash, I'll get to that next.

So... what's in the case?

Andrej said...

By the way, I'm wondering if the ankheg is indeed a polymorphed wizard judging from the way the scroll case (if that's what it is) was strapped on and the chain already worn. Lukas, if you have access to Alexis's spell descriptions, what does it say about a caster's belongings?

Ahmet said...

Ahmet could pound it, but then no one's watching the door.

Lukas said...

I did not notice a specific mention in the document I possess.

Ahmet said...

How about this plan, to speed things along:

Maximillian breaks apart the corpse to retrieve the chain, using either his belaying pin or Andrej's mace.

Lukas searches the area.

Andrej studies the scroll case.

Ahmet guards the exit.

Good?

James C. said...

Sure.

Alexis Smolensk said...

It will definitely be easier to smash the carapace. I'm only saying you don't know precisely how much time that will take.

I don't think there's anything said about a caster's belongings, except references to a spellbook.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Except for smashing into the corpse and examining the case, Lukas and Ahmet have already decided those things are what they're doing. I'd like to speed along also.

Andrej said...

I stated Andrej was opening the case and looking inside yesterday, several posts ago. I think we're just waiting on Max. I'd like to know what's in the case in the meantime, though.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Sorry, Andrej, I missed it.

The scrollcase contains a scroll.

James C. said...

No worries. I unroll the scroll. Can I tell what it is?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Yes, it's a clerical scroll. And ... because I'm a really sweet guy, its a clerical scroll of the Restore spell.

Lukas said...

I guess until we're sure the medallion is or is not magical it would be peeking behind the curtain too much to ask if these were randomly rolled?

Andrej said...

You are a sweet guy. So Max, what's it worth to you?

Just teasing.

Maximillian Boii said...

Sorry, it's my turn to have a snow experience, and I just got caught up...

I'm fine to smash the carapace, and would also point out that while lukas was gathering the acid from the previous corpse, I searched the "node" room.

I'll talk about treasure as soon as I find my phone.

For now, just let me say wow, holyshit, that's a nice find. I had despaired of ever being able to get a 7th level spell cast...

Maximillian Boii said...

regarding the treasure, I had to find my phone, where I had noted that it is Lukas' turn for first pick. I'll have to dig up the boroge post to remember whether we had also assigned the order of second pick, or whether that was based on who was "mvp" for the fight.

I'll also say that to have a 6th level clerical spell cast would cost a fortune, so if Lukas picks that scroll for the exp, I would not begrudge him, and would make the best offer I could to have it cast. Say, 1200 gold in coin and treasure. Does that sound fair?

Lukas said...

With only two items, do we want to split now or see about maybe after we are 'done' with the temple? If we want to cast it now, can we do the split calculations later still?

I'm just thinking we could more evenly split if we find something in minotaur land.

Lukas said...

Two advantages to this tactic. Evener split potential and One detect magic for every item we dig out.

Maximillian Boii said...

That's a reasonable suggestion Lukas, I'm in favor of that, and my offer still stands for whoever picks the scroll. (to be clear, 600 coins, and a silver chain mantlet I once had appraised at 600. I've been lugging it around thinking it would make an excellent gift to the right person.

Alexis Smolensk said...

(OOC: The medallion has a purpose. As far as the scroll goes, sometimes the DM has to break the fourth wall; Maximillian has played without one complaint about losing a level, which is staggering in its nobility, and I'm interested in keeping his spirits up. The scroll gives Andrej some x.p., it gives Maximillian his level back, and if we can acknowledge that Ahmet just recently got a girlfriend and that Lukas is on the short end right now, the medallion - and it's x.p. - can pass into his possession. Not that it has to go that way, but a DM has notions too)

Lukas said...

Not going to lie, if I have to choose now I would just let you use the scroll and soak up the XP from it for no gold. I'd rather have fully capable companions operating as meat shields than less than full capable companions.

Andrej said...

I'm OK with all of that, Alexis.

Andrej will get the scroll and the XP
Max will get his level back
Lukas will get the medallion

If Andrej is not already last in line to select treasure I'll voluntarily go there, as I imagine the scroll is the biggest XP haul here.

Lukas said...

Sounds good.
Let's just go with that and forge onwards.

We probably are going to be out of torchlight soon and there are minotaurs to beat senseless.

Alexis Smolensk said...

It takes three minutes to smash the carapace and free the chain, which I am now going to consider as having been done.

Lukas can't get experience from the use of the scroll, and I am highly resistant to the idea of his selling it. I don't like how the selling of magic affects the gameplayer's mindset with regards to rare things, as it encourages greed over utility.

Maximillian Boii said...

Our current order (for first pick of treasure) was Lukas, Andrej, Ahmet, Me.

So, shall we do as Andrej described, and name Ahmet as next up?

Alexis Smolensk said...

I have forgotten up to this moment that THIS party divides the treasure experience from magic items and I believe jewellery. This is the only time I've every rewarded x.p. this way, but I will continue with that practice.

Andrej said...

I'm also OK with letting Lukas select the scroll and giving it to Andrej to use on Max and sticking to our normal treasure selecting routine.

Really, I'm just happy to be playing rather than running a game in this campaign and am not worried if somebody gets a few more XP than me. Ahmet is already crushing us in combat XP. Like Lukas, as long as the party is a capable one and we're having a good time together my needs as a player are being met.

Maximillian Boii said...

We do?

Andrej said...

OK, this actually works out perfectly..

Lukas 1st, chooses medallion
Andrej 2nd, chooses scroll

Ahmet 3rd, chooses from next haul

Then Max

Andrej takes his scroll and abra-cadabras Max back to 2nd level

Andrej said...

Alexis, I think we've been dividing treasure of all types into lots, it just happens that magic items being valuable are often their own lots while the coins and other treasure end up getting packaged.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Okay, let's do this then.

Maximillian can take his level back (and hit points) when Andrej says he reads the scroll. I believe we had arranged that Maximillian's x.p. never changed. Andrej can then have 770 x.p. for the scroll, including 10% (restoration is 7th level after all) and Lukas can have 572 x.p. for the medallion. Ahmet can have first pick of the next treasure (which I will roll randomly) and Maximillian the round after that.

All good?

I'm ruling with the discussion, breaking of carapaces and so on, that 10 minutes have passed since leaving the node at the start of this post. The previous torch has gutted out, and the one Ahmet lit instead of it has 12 minutes left. The other torch has also gutted out, but at this moment I'm going to assume you're reserving it.

Ready to move on? Tell me where you're going.

Ahmet said...

(OOC: I think Madame Salvador might have something to say about who gets the title of Ahmet's girlfriend. At least, I hope she does.) ;)

Andrej said...

That depends on how many torches are left. I'm confused on how many torches we just lost, though, it look slike you may have indicated that one torch gutted out twice in your comment, Alexis. Am I correct or did we just lose 2 torches?

Andrej said...

I believe we have the following left:

1 lit torch, Ahmet

3 unlit torches carried one each by by Ahmet, Andrej and Lukas

If all concur, let's backtrack and take the other tunnel back at the node.

Maximillian Boii said...

Did that 10 minutes include the casting of restoration, or not?

Thanks everyone for the level back. I will put those hp to use!

Andrej said...

Andrej reads the scroll now and restores Max's level if not.

Lukas said...

I will use this opportunity to take some awe in the watching of a high level spell for a moment before doing whatever it is I was doing again.

Maximillian Boii said...

OK, I'm assuming that I gain the 13 hp that I added to my max (so I don't need to be healed.)

That is a huge relief! I feel much better! (This was the sort of gloom you were talking about in the weather post, Alexis.)

Maximillian Boii said...

err, apparently it was 14.

You were correct about the exp Alexis, that's unchanged.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Going back to the node, Andrej, I said one torch had 2 minutes and one torch had 8 minutes. After ten minutes, both those torches are gone.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Casting spell; 4 rounds; counting as one full minute including discharge.

Ahmet's torch: 11 minutes

Maximillian Boii said...

Yeah, I just went back and reread the earlier posts and I concur about the torches.

We lit one torch when we entered the old storeroom.
We lit a second torch just inside the bug hole.

Those two have now gone out.
There was a lot of back and forth regarding torches, so I'm unsure if we are considered to have burned through an additional torch since then, or if the one Ahmet is holding is our third torch.

The torch Ahmet lit was listed as coming from Andrej's inventory. Andrej, are those torches in addition to the four from the Unterns, or are we down to one unlit torch?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Maximillian has it correct.

Ahmet said...

Ready to move out and return to the node.

Before entering the second tunnel, however, I would like to search the body of the ankheg we killed earlier to make sure it doesn't have a necklace too. Maybe we missed it the first time?

Andrej said...

I understand now, we all appear to be in concurrence, then.

Max, to answer your question as far as I know Andrej and the Unterns were the only ones who thought to bring torches. If true, we have the one lit torch you mentioned and 3 unlit torches carried one each by Ahmet, Andrej and Lukas.

Andrej is ready to follow Ahmet back to the node.

Ahmet said...

Ahmet adds "lantern, bullseye" to his shopping list.

Ahmet said...

Lukas, Max, any thoughts or can we proceed to the node?

Maximillian Boii said...

Yes, let's proceed.

Alexis Smolensk said...

1 minute to get back to the node, but I won't penalize the searching of the creature's neck for a necklace. There is no jewellery or anything of the kind on the fresh kill.

Working on the next post now.

Ahmet said...

Ah well. Was wondering if perhaps these were "pets" and the necklace was the equivalent of a dog collar from when the creature was smaller. I think Andrej's polymorph theory is more likely.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The next post is up.
