General Campaign Information (Aug 8, 2013)

Book mark this thread, use it for all forward going questions regarding rules, restrictions, character details and NON-REAL WORLD specifics not related to the actual course of events in the campaign. When we get to 500 comments, I'll start a new post.

Please limit personal comments off this thread; let's keep it primarily for rules comprehension and necessary data (like the weight of things), along with noted errors in existing rules or the wiki.

I should note that this need not necessarily be restricted to questions from the party - but if you're not in the party, please keep your questions as relevant as possible.

I should have listened to my first impuse and recorded the dice rolls. : /

Dwarven fighter

(Thats how the str thing works right? Roll a %?)

Hit me with all your random backgroundness!

As a note to myself...

4 proficiencies

Alexis Smolensk said...

Yes, presuming you rolled a natural 18 to start. Have you adjusted for dwarf, +1 con, -1 charisma?

Gender?

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'll give you an image tomorrow; I'm hung up tonight, and I don't have the doc with me today.

Lukas said...

Sorry, male and yes I have this time.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I've posted a file with your character background on it on the Character Generator page. I have adjusted your stats for age. You added 1 point of constitution (17) and subtracted 1 point of wisdom (11).

You are one massive dwarf.

Look sinecure up.Despite your good charisma, the rolls for that blew anyway. Your composition is going to come in handy when I introduce wilderness damage, which will be sometime in the next few months.

I need to calculate where you're from; I'll get back to you on this.

You start with 15 hit points.

Alexis Smolensk said...

You're from a little town on the Ionian coast, Anatolia, called Edremit, not far from the island of Lesbos.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'll post a rundown on races in the wiki sometime over the next couple of days.

Lukas said...

Awesome, now I do gear and proficiencies yes?

Shame, looks like he would have made a great ranger. I just wanted to stick with a class that's actually on the wiki.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Ouch.

We have had a ranger running with this party before.

Please use the Hanya table to gear up. Unless the background says differently (I haven't looked too closely yet), you have four proficiencies. You know where the weapon table is for fighter, obviously.

Lukas said...

Cool, I was eying those tables for approximates. Though I was partially hoping to avoid the metal shortage ;)

I'll get the complete character up this weekend unless you want to review it earlier.

Alexis Smolensk said...

There's no hurry at all.

Lukas said...

Wait... did a fighter need to be a specific level to ride a war griffon?

:D

Lukas said...

Oh and if so, can I get goggles? Obviously to keep the wind of flying from disturbing my vision.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Your success at risding a hippogriff is largely dependent upon your level; your mastery is a percentage graded on your level vs. the hippogriff, and overall the hippogriff's willingness to obey you is dependent upon its morale. In short, if you want the hippogriff to do anything while you're riding it, you have to establish a rappor with it - else it will simply turn in flee anything it encounters, like a horse rearing under an unfamiliar rider.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Goggles, I'm afraid, are out of the question.

Oh, and I happened to remember. You're a dwarf. You're too short to ride a hippogriff.

Lukas said...

Well, it was griffon, but I accept your stance.

Lukas said...

Oh and unfortunately since that was kind of establishing the direction my funds went I will have to delay one more day on that character.

Maximillian said...

Are the stat requirements for assassins different from thieves?

Lukas said...

There goes the ability to scout out the islands by air.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Yes, an assassin needs a 12 strength, an 11 intelligence and a 12 dexterity.

Alexis Smolensk said...

There's a race limitation too ... human, and (I think) dwarf, half-elf or half-orc. The only one I'm dead sure about it half-orc.

Maximillian said...

So I've made my rolls, but I'm finding that, like a poker player who won't play a practice hand for risk of using up their luck, I'm hesitant of playing a secondary character. I'll get over it. These rolls seem much better as a regent than an adventurer anyway.

Assuming this meets minimums, I'm thinking gnome illusionist-assassin.
These stats will be interesting to play...

str: 6
int: 15 (14+1)
wis: 7 (8-1)
con: 8
dex: 17
cha: 18

(I stuck the 18 in charisma because honestly whenever I've met someone who had a lot of weaknesses, but were still able to get by, they were really fucking charming. This guy can't take a hit, so he better be able to talk his way out...)

Lukas said...

Just stand behind me doktor.
My hearty dwarf will protect you. And since you're a gnome you'll actually be small enough to hide behind me...

Maximillian said...

I did check the race limitations on the wiki, but I can't make the str unless I give up the charisma, so I'll have to pick one...

Maximillian said...

Maybe there's a copy-paste error. It looks like the only race that cannot be assassin is halfling as written.

Lukas said...

Oh wait, Max I think you have the limitation reversed.

Lukas said...

Human, Half elf, half orc and dwarf I think are the allowed...

Maximillian said...

What do you think guys? Make an incredibly annoying illusionist assassin? Or make a really charming illusionist? I'm leaning towards charm, and that may be the only option available if there was an error on the wiki.

Maximillian said...

Alexis, many of your characters adjust their stats according to your background generator. Does that happen before or after class assignment, since it may make the chosen class disallowed?

Alexis Smolensk said...

There's a couple of things.

First, the strength has to be 12, not 6. That's too little.

Also, be careful, because if you pick a half-elf, that may go down, it will become a 5, and you won't be an assassin. However, if you're an illusionist, you have to be human or gnome anyway, and I don't think a gnome can be an assassin.

Note that I did add Illusionist level 2 and 3 spells on the weekend to the wiki.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Race modifiers to stats are done before the generator, age modifiers are done after (since the modifier generates the age, and the race is chosen).

Alexis Smolensk said...

Oh, thanks for the link Maximillian!

I thought I hadn't notes for what race could be what class here.

The wiki is correct; Anything I wrote above that disagrees with the wiki is wrong. Gnomes can be assassins.

James C. said...

Max, either of those options sound fun to play to me.

Maximillian said...

Thanks for clarifying. It doesn't matter; as you pointed out, I don't have the strength for it unless I give up charisma, and anticipating a more sedentary lifestyle, I don't want to give that up. I do have the stats (as selected above) for an illusionist-thief though, so that's what I'll choose.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Why, o why, with every character generated, do I have to ask this question?

GENDER?

Lukas said...

Probably because we don't die enough to have made a habit of it...

Maybe a step by step checklist...

Tell you what, if you want I could set up an initial checklist in order when I have the time.

That's one of my most used sections of any core rulebook outside the equipment sections.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Maximillian, what gender is your new character.

Fellas, incidentally - IF you want to split the party, you will need a nick for your alternate character. This doesn't mean you need to create a whole new blog page - Enrico's nick can link to Ahmet's blog, etc ... but you will need to have a separate profile. Can't have Ahmet replying to Enrico's actions.

Think of it as busy-work.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Lukas, if you go to the wiki, there's a step-by-step check list that not only includes the request for gender, but also a paragraph stating why I allow gender to be chosen.

Lukas said...

Um, let me put something together and tell me if you like it. That's a good page, but I'm thinking something concise links would be handy.
That just is the first half.

Also, speaking of links, is the combat movement point docs going to make it into the new wiki? Or am I completely missing it?
The MP per armor chart and the MP per action are both I have to consult during creation at least.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The movement doc is going to be an ongoing process, but yes, I will put it in the wiki. I've been working on other things.

I'm not having any trouble with character creation, except that sometimes I am where I can't see my books, and people seem to have a blind spot where gender is concerned.

Maximillian said...

heh, I purposefully didn't include gender previously because I was debating it. Lets go with male, in order to avoid all that bs about men only playing beautiful women.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Well, this should make the party happy".

The new illusionist is up on the wiki. That should read "addiction", not "addition," in reference to spirits.

The "family" that loves him is the orphanage where he grew up. I'll have to roll up where that is.

Be careful not to get addicted to anything else.

It's certainly a strange character.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I have it that Maximillian's other character is from Bohemia, from near a town called Zwittau.

Both the new characters, we will argue, arrived on the Ottoman yawl, as passengers, deciding not to chance the encounter with the Petrel.

The illusionist's equipment can be obtained from the Hanya document. Pick three spells from the illusionist 1st level spells (on the wiki), along with the following cantrips:

2 haunting sound, 3 illusionary, 1 legerdemain, 4 person-affecting, 1 personal and 1 reversed, with 6 useful.

Lukas said...

Are those oz of alchohol adjusted for the gnomes bodyweight?

Maximillian said...

Heh, was that a reference to the father's legacy?

Thank you Alexis, this is an interesting one.

Do I start as a first-level thief and illusionist, or as half-level of each?

HP? I probably have just enough to get one wound...

Alexis Smolensk said...

Everyone knows how prodigiously gnomes drink. Yes, those totals are correct.

You start as both, Maximillian. You are a full 1st level thief and a full 1st level illusionist. I suppose I shall have to start clearly identifying the thieves' abilities at last. I'll start to do so this week. For the present, please let them alone, you'll have them written out for you on the wiki.

You need 3,501 experience to go up to 2nd level, at which time you'll go up completely to 2nd level in both classes. There is no division of experience.

Alexis Smolensk said...

The gnome is big enough to get a d6 for mass hit points. So that works out to maximum of a d4+d6 divided by 2 adding con bonus (there isn't any), plus 1d6 for mass = 9 hit points (I rolled a 4).

Starting armor class is 7 for your dexterity. You're limited to an illusionist's armor (none) and a thief's weapons ... which again I'll have to distill for you. I'll put that together tonight - if something doesn't come up.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Oh, the gnome does not get drunk when imbibing that much alcohol. That is the gnome's NORMAL condition.

Can we please have names for the new fighter and the new illusionist/thief?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Another point in fact; the ftr and ill/thf won't meet anyone in the party until AFTER half the party is left. They're not player characters at this time, though they are technically on the island.

Maximillian said...

Neklan Krasna

Lukas said...

Kismet Korkmaz

Alexis Smolensk said...

I can't remember, Neklan, if you can't download publisher. If you can, the weapons are on the file on the Thief page, under Players in the Wiki.

Maximillian said...

I can't.

I assume an illusionist gets 1 field of study and two specialties (+1 bonus) as the cleric?

I choose Power: Artifacts, Astrology, and Dweomercraft.

I'd like something like a sabretache or satchel. Would those be found in your world?

Lukas said...

I made a blog, then got blue screen of deathed and now no longer am able to find said blog. I will get back to uploading everything soon.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Maximillian, the illusionist has totally different subject material from the cleric. I'll put that up on the wiki also (thought I do plan to change much of it in the months to come - at the moment, I consider that a low priority)

Alexis Smolensk said...

I have upgraded the Thief's Combat Abilities page with an image for weapons, and posted rules for Pick Pockets. I will be adding rules for thieving abilities throughout the week.

Thief.

Please confirm that you've seen them, that you've chosen your two proficiencies and that there are no technical problems on the pages.

Maximillian said...

Thank you.

Is the blowgun in the weaponwright's shop an assassin-only weapon? It doesn't even show up on the fighter's table.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I've added Climb Walls also, and posted that on my main blog as well.

I don't use blowguns in my campaign, except by primitive peoples. Apart from Hollywood, and the occasional real person who may have employed them after encountering primitive cultures post 17th century, I know of no pre-1650 example of a cultivated person using them.

They're problematic anyway. They really don't do any actual damage, except with poison, in which case I would have to restrict it entirely to the assassin class. If someone wants to find me a pre-1650 example of European or Muslim use, I'll remember to add it to the assassins weapon table when I make it.

Neklan Krasna said...

test

Neklan Krasna said...

The explanation for the blowgun makes sense. I asked because they seem to always be available, and a 1 damage (equivalent to a bugbite, which my cantrips inflict) weapon seems reasonable for my character. Are other classes not allowed to apply poisons? I'll have to get rid of my poison then ;)

Alexis Smolensk said...

I don't have any problem with your having poison. But any system that demands you put your lips immediately next to the poison and then blow very precisely to hit a target without actually poisoning yourself takes special skill.

I presume you're not planning on delivering any of your poison into your enemies' bodies via the mouth.

Maximillian said...

I know that you've said the casting of a spell is obvious to anyone observing (or possibly even listening?) to the caster. Is that true for cantrips as well? I'm thinking of the "Palm" legerdemain cantrip, which allows the theft of an object. It wouldn't seem useful if everyone knew you'd cast a spell right before the object disappeared, but then again it is only a cantrip... Is this a special case? There are several others that seem designed to be cast without anyone noticing.

Maximillian said...

While we're on the subject of cantrips, I want to clarify that thingamajig cannot produce a lock-pick or skeleton key.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Because cantrips are cast so quickly, inside your actual round of action, and not requiring a wait to the next round to discharge like a spell, they are noticeable as a sign of casting, but generally can be gotten off without issue.

Because the palm cantrip is special, no, it is not detectable as a cantrip that has been cast (part of the legerdemain cantrip's special nature).

The thingamagig cantrip can only create the items actually listed in the cantrip description.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I've added Stealth to the thief list.

neklan said...

I selected my spells. I think my character sheet is done.

Neklan Krasna said...

Oh, not quite done with all my questions...

I purchased the two Unusual books that were available in Hanya, as well as two common books (of the 32 available). I don't remember how selecting their subjects goes.

Lukas said...

FYI, the page exists, I managed to recover it through black magics even I don't understand... I may be contracted to sacrifice my first born and don't know it.

I'll log in and post here as soon as I have a breath. Would have done it last night but I was introducing 2 people to the wonders of pen and paper and getting two other folks involved again after a long time.

Alexis Smolensk said...

Sorry, Lukas, I'll confess. I don't know what you're asking.

Lukas said...

Just telling you that my dwarf's sheet will be available soon.

Maximillian said...

I just realized that my pages haven't been showing up as links on my blog for other readers. Mareo's page has been there all along, but was probably invisible to everyone except me...

Maximillian said...

Another question, to which I am pretty sure the answer is no:

Can I forgo a cantrip (or a spell) in order to have another one twice per day? In other words, can I select the same cantrip(or spell) twice?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Maximillian,

Not a merry chance in hell. That's so 2nd/3rd edition thinking, and it counteracts the need to challenge a spellcaster to be more than a sort of magic pistol or weapon. I still haven't quite understood how that rule adaptation was EVER supposed to improve the game.

I'll try not to be really nasty about it. I wouldn't ask me about it in the real world ... lol.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Oi! Don't be giving Alexis no smack about multiple of the same spell laddie!

What silly sod would be limiting themselves by picking two of the same spell anyhow!

Especially an illusionist. Ye have a good deal of VERY fine and versatile spells to choose from. Be glad and revel in your fine options!

(OOC: No, the cliched dwarf talk is likely going to be just for this post. I find it silly. That said, I think I feel the need to do something noteworthy with his attitude to differentiate him from Lukas...)

Neklan Krasna said...

Alexis, it's sounding likely that we'll end up playing the secondary party first (as we have one player with a preference ;) So, I'd like to ask again about the titles of the books in Hanya. (I purchased 2 common and 2 unusual) Are there any that would give insight into the region?

Also, you mentioned that you might have changed the fields available to illusionists from the table listed here Is there a more recent list?

I just found the following tool that allows you to convert .pub documents to other formats.

Lukas said...

Hey Alexis,

can we augment the workforce in our off-days of adventuring to improve construction by ~40%ish?

If we have 10 workers and 4 party members...

Alexis Smolensk said...

Augmenting ... I suppose so, if you feel so inclined. Does it increase the food produced, or shorten the time necessary? Hmmmm. I think the new land needs adjusting seasonally, so that with each new year you could increase the food production by 25%, up to a maximum of 8 new food for this island ... but that new labor would only speed up the time the 25% gain could be produced. New land, to hold water, needs to have something grow on it, and I'll judge the spring doesn't produce enough water to flood a greater area until 25% more island is covered in vegetation.

Lukas said...

My thought is construction speed. Because then by extension we could leave hirelings behind and have them help with the docks, or the tower or the whatever...

Although what you're saying seems to make sense.

I need to read it again when I'm not running on 4 hours of sleep for 3 days...

Alexis Smolensk said...

I feel you don't need to worry so much about construction speed, Lukas. You're going to produce the same amount of food this season regardless of the speed with which you get the irrigation system dug; you're talking about a week or two difference without much real change.

Yes,leave a hireling behind, someone MUST oversee the labor - the choice should be made on who has the nearest to engineering/construction experience, either Tazio or Carlito. Two bosses for one job with 10 laborers is a waste.

Lukas said...

Well, it's a waste on THAT project. But if that project completes quickly we start work on the next project sooner and the next one... A few weeks saved on each project becomes a month on two and two months on 4...

Maximillian said...

Hey, when you originally posted the illusionist spells, I thought you'd stated that the phantasmal figure was non-corporeal, but I reread your comment and you were talking about a different spell. What I'm wondering is, can my phantasmal figure act as my porter, or is it non-corporeal too?

Alexis Smolensk said...

It's only ability is to appear as a block between you and a potential enemy - or to otherwise move with you if you're worried of someone firing random arrows out of the bush, that sort of thing. It cannot serve as a porter.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

I keep forgetting to ask you about the weight of the illusion book that the gnomes would be seeking. I also keep forgetting to put it in my equipment list since I forgot originally as I never asked about the weight or anything...

Alexis Smolensk said...

Call it 4 lbs.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

I didn't see anything saying dwarves can't wield particular weapons, but I want to double check again since I wouldn't be surprised if I missed it.

Do dwarves have to use smaller weapons? Or is my pike/longsword ok?

Alexis Smolensk said...

Sorry for the delay.

No character can wield a weapon that is longer than they are tall, or which weighs more than a quarter of their weight.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Including polearms?
Or specifically with one handed like the longsword?

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Oh and I don't mind the delay, I'll just retcon and switch to something smaller if it is an issue. If you don't mind.

Neklan Krasna said...

I have two questions about my character's weak upper body strength: Is a sling allowed and does it suffer a penalty?

I also have the handstands/roundoffs gymnastics ability. Is that contradicted by the weak upper body?

Alexis Smolensk said...

This page indicates all the weapons a thief can use. Multiclass get the WORST armor and the BEST weapons of the classes employed. So Illusionist armor restrictions and Thief weapon options.

There's no penalty to your using a sling.

Doing a handstand or a round-off is a balance issue, not a strength issue. It is like that old Norm Macdonald show where he was the ex-hockey player, where people gave him trouble about not being good enough to say in pro-sports. "I'm only bad compared to other professional hockey players," he said. "Not compared to YOU."

Neklan has a weak upper body strength compared to other thieves/illusionists ... but it is still vastly superior to ordinary people. The only thing you should worry there is the actual penalty associated with your upper body weakness.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Not trying to be too bothersome, but...

About the polearms... Some of them for normal folks (including the pike) are listed on average of being at least 10 feet on Wikipedia... Upwards to 25!

I'm guessing they don't use the standard 'must be this tall to use'?

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Regarding my question above... My goal is to have 1 reach weapon, a regular hand weapon, a thrown weapon and a ranged weapon proper.

I am uncertain if I can achieve this with polearms.

I am simply going to have to likely choose a hafted weapon rather than bladed for the longsword. Only the shortest of the longswords qualifies by wikipedian standards.

I know a hand axe works for throwing.

I am fairly certain a heavy crossbow works for ranged.

Alexis Smolensk said...

No, that's a very good point about polearms. Skipping those that are 25 feet in length ... must have required a sling that met the body - perhaps we could make the agreement that a polearm can be up to 'three' times the height? Twice? I'm not sure what measure one could make. None of the pole arms I use in the game are more than 12 feet (the 13+ foot polearms were never actually used in single combat, and were generally dropped once pushed into a horse's belly during a charge). So twice works - that would give Kismet a polearm that would be 8 feet long, and that will justify the 'attack two hexes away' power of the polearm.

Suits you?

I think you're good with a short sword, a battle axe (where the length of handle can be adjusted, or a broad sword.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Thank you Alexis.

I mainly went for the longsword because it had so many pretty varieties in the store.

I will double check weapon availability.

Yes I understand about the 25 feet for sure.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Spears appear to be in the 8ft range AND are available.

Broad-swords are also available. I will adjust accordingly.

Regarding combat...

Is there a penalty for holding a spear in his off-hand (at rest) and a throwing axe in his main hand?

Thus he could throw the axe (or drop it) then take to using the spear as normal?

Alexis Smolensk said...

I've never employed a penalty for holding two weapons, only for trying to use both at the same time.

Keep in mind, a spear does not have the reach-two-hexes option for combat.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Ah, then there are no available weapons within that range...

I'll come back to it then. For now broadsword and I'll deal with it later when I can find out which stick with a point at the end is long enough.

I'm setting an alarm now to consult my 2nd edition book on this when I get home. Wikipedia is failing me hard and I don't want to spam this thread till I have a concrete answer.

Since there are no other available polarms but pike and lance that means I can pick whatever and just have to hunt it down later like the crossbow.

Alexis Smolensk said...

You realize that polearms have any length that you really need, right? The length is dependent on the handle, not the head. So you're free to pick whatever one you want.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Actually, I always just assumed I got what I got or it wasn't really that type of weapon anymore...

Then I shall stick with an 8 foot pike?

Alexis Smolensk said...

An 8-foot pike is fine; and gives the two-hex-attack option.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Also, A: can we get local prices for food?

and B: How often do we want to update local prices for a stationary campaign? I'm guessing not every day...

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Hrm, I thought I was 4 in splint given I had no shield. Let me double check...

18/89 is above 18/76 which is marked at 4 here...

http://www.thesameuniversewiki.org/Armor%20Effects%20On%20Movement.ashx?HL=armor

Alexis Smolensk said...

Darn that strength ... its right to question me, I can't check every table all the time.

Recalculating, then; you're 8 hexes away, you can still move 2 hexes this round, throw the axe, be 1.5 rounds from combat and be at 6 hex range when you throw ... still no penalty.

Also, I had said earlier that you should use the Hanya table for local food prices. You can buy anything that is available in the Town Market section.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Yep, I caught that, thanks.

It's ok. I was trying to get the heaviest armor I could at 4 MP so I don't blame you for thinking it was 3, technically it's right on the edge.

Kismet Korkmaz said...

Oh uh, so do you do mighty bows then? I saw mention of those.

Alexis Smolensk said...

A long bow does 1-8 damage and fires every other round. A short bow does 1-6 and fires in the same period. The issue is largely one of height; must be 5' tall to use a long bow. A long bow also cannot be used from horseback.

Neklan Krasna said...

I'd like to make something using the carapace of the beetle that I collected. I was thinking perhaps cloak clasps, or if that's unworkable, perhaps brooches. If this would fall outside of my lapidary skill, that's fine. I'd obviously need tools and supplies to do this, and I'm not sure how much they'd cost or if they're even available way out here. Anyway, let me know what you think. There's obviously no rush, since I imagine it will take no small number of evenings.

Andrej said...

Alexis, any idea how much Andrej weighs? I seem to recall it being 165 lbs. I know his height is 5'4". I seem to have erased both for some reason from my sheet but was bale to look up height going back to the earliest Dachau posts on this blog.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I don't have it on this computer. I will have to wait until I get home.

Andrej said...

Just a reminder, when you next have a chance if you could look up Andrej's weight. Thanks.

Alexis Smolensk said...

I'm just going to re-generate it. So just presume you've changed weight if you find the old number.

I find Andrej's new weight to be ...

158 lbs.

Maximillian Boii said...

Is armor easily re-sized between races in your world? Could an orc (or a dwarf) wear mundane human armor without visiting an armorsmith?

Alexis Smolensk said...

It depends on the armor. I'm willing to allow chain and scale to be virtually universal (they hang on the shoulders). Chausses, hauberk, leather and studded leather are adaptable up to a 20% change in body mass. Banded mail, plate and splinted mail are limited to a 10% change in body mass. Plate armor, which I haven't incorporated into the market table, adds 1 AC over plate mail and needs to be personally made for the wearer.
