The Party Could Have Been Fighting Sheep

Boroge slithers forward five feet, one hex, and the middle heads draw back. The lighter green head, which is clearly the female one, looks at Lukas and says, "YOU SHOULD BE RUNNING."

The head most on the left, that was butted out of the way by the female (do did the crit to Ahmet last turn) attacks Ahmet now. It rolls an 18 and delivers only a small nip for 4 damage. This, I feel certain, does not stun Ahmet (who I'm sure will happily return the attack). Ahmet also takes one additional damage at this time from the wound (which won't stun him either).

The right most head actually attacks Enrico ... the second from the right weaves overtop and dives down at Andrej ... who stoops at the last moment and is missed. Enrico is not so lucky. The head hits him with a 17, causing a very unpleasant 10 damage to the poor noobie. Enrico falls back into 2306 (arrows show Enrico's last movement from 2407, then the subsequent movement after the attack).

That completes the hydra's movement for this round.

The party may do as they will - Enrico is stunned and can do nothing. General word to the wise ... if you don't get in it, you don't get out of it. X.P. distribution so far (10% included for those who get that bonus).

Ahmet - 678
Enrico - 306
Andrej - 304
Sofia - 78
Lukas - 205
Maximillian - 156

(OOC: an extra point about battle healing that hadn't occurred to me before ... IF you do the healing, then take that extra healing in damage, I already do give experience for that. But if you get healed, but you never actually needed it - ie., took no additional damage - then it was never worthy of x.p. in the first place)

There's no glory in sheepslaying!

(OOC: Good point.)

There's no glory in fighting sheep... but discretion and valor being what they are, let's spread out and start moving back toward the opening. The heads can't pursue us all at once.

Andrej steps back to hex 2407.

Sofia stays put but flings a a dagger at the main body:

to hit: 13
dmg: 4

Ordinarily, I think you allow one movement while casting? If that's possible in this water, I'll move back to 1808, but either way I'll cast shillelagh.

FYI, Enrico is now at 7 HP. Ahmet is at 30.

Ahmet indeed does return the attack, slashing at the head that bit him... and, yes, rolls what I believe is his first natural 20! (Next roll is a 9.)

Guess I'm not deleting the Diceshaker app after all...

Damage is 6, +3 for STR, +1 for Dilmek... so 20 total.

Ahmet uses his remaining 2 MP to slog one hex northwest to 2112.

Alexis, does my character's knowledge of magic imply that casting sleep would be pointless or that it could actually work?

If my mage knowledge says it could work I begin casting sleep.

I'm curious if it's an all or nothing or a per head basis.

Rules are up to 16 HD affected, over 4HD get a save vs Magic.

If it could not, I will throw a dart at the body (which is still conveniently within 6 hexes) and back away another hex to 1810.

I don't think I can move and cast in the same turn with the hex penalty.

I'm reducing sleep back to its original spell effect, where it did not affect creatures of more than 4+ hit dice (and then removing the saving throw for it, also like the Player's Handbook). Sorry about that; I did change it for the offline campaign but I haven't written that anywhere, and you're entitled to cast it if you want.

I will suspend the change for this combat if you feel at this time it's unfair. Your call.

I am afraid I will have to suspend movement and casting at the same time, given the environment.

Ahmet, you massively stun the left most head, leaving it with a nasty wound (not unlike yours). The whole creature reacts.

Sofia's dagger hits and does the 4 damage.

I lost a lot in the job move, it's possible you did mention it at one point. I am perfectly fine with revising my action.

Hrm... I think with them advancing and I will go with casting Acid Arrow instead, at this rate I will never cast unless I do it now.

We're in deep doo-doo.

(OOC: I'm done for the day, sirs. I won't have as much time tomorrow, but we'll try to get a round done. I'll check back, answer questions in a few hours)

Yes, yes we are.

Really I think the idea now is for a fighting withdrawal back to the entrance while staying spread out. We need to do enough damage to the hydra that it also withdraws. This thing still has a morale value, I presume, so let's try to force a roll. As much damage as soon as possible has to be our policy... especially if you all agree we need to get out of here.

Lukas said...

Well I want to pull a Hydra head out of here, and we HAVE managed to stun one so far...

Just sayin, I mean its going to be food on a string as we try and get out of the hole.

Besides, why does it want us to run? That's an interesting comment from it...

Ahmet said...

I'm hoping we can retreat to a natural chokepoint where it can only stick in one head at a time.

That's... what she said?

Lukas said...

I don't think it would stand and fight. I think it would just back off and wait until we are vulnerable again... I mean it's smart enough to argue...

Maximillian said...

I ... don't remember a natural chokepoint, unless there's one behind it. I suppose there is the hole itself.

Maybe its just taking pity on us. Ahmet just gave it his very best shot and only stunned the thing and there are five heads still, two of which have not even attacked.

I ... don't remember a natural chokepoint, unless there's one behind it.

Agreed.

We can always live today to fight another day... I mean we have allies and hirelings near at hand. We could always return in greater force.

That said, we should continue to pound it with what we have while making an orderly and spacious retreat. Damn shame the sleep spell and Andrej's hold person are completely useless here.

Lukas said...

I dunno about you, but I do remember a comment about people with armor going in all the time. AKA stuff going in and not coming out... You know... on the other side... I bet there's awesome treasure too.

Ahmet said...

I don't think we have a choice but to stand and fight, to be honest.

Maximillian said...

Getting us all up that rope is going to take a while, and people who fall risk drowning.

Lukas said...

I don't think drowning was what I was worried about so much.

James C. said...

I think we have to at least consider leaving if we don't drop a head or two soon.

In the meantime, though, neither Andrej nor Sofia are leaving. Stay spread out. If Andrej or Ahmet could be even further apart it would force the hydra to make a choice on who to move toward and attack. This could open up an opportunity for striking the easier to hit main body to help get the overall hit points down. Meanwhile, Lukas pound sit with magic and the others chip in as they can.

Lukas said...

Remember, pound is two accurate shots. One has a max damage of 13 the other 5, but they have a high or guaranteed chance to hit respectively.

The question that remains for me is that if I overkill on one head if the extra damage is lost. Currently I question if Ahmet's head is at just a couple HP.

Got interrupted. The new post is up; some people have found it already.
