Ahmet's Decline

Outside Tyrol, not quite midnight, the 25th of October, 1650.

Having passed the comment limit, the last post is continued here.  Ahmet is in a bad way; an infection seems to be spreading through him, that may be turning him undead.  Holy water, cure light wounds and an attempt at turning back the disease have all proved fruitless.

What will the party do?

(re-posted from previous post)

Andrej uses another vial of holy water upon Ahmet's wound (leaving three).

Sofia and Hichem begin preparing two horses for a hast departure.

"Good, good Sofia. Our thoughts are one. I will ride back or forward to the closest town with both Ahmet and the girl upon the spare horse. Sofia and Hichem will finish breaking camp and catch up as they can. Lukas and Janos, I might require some help if riding ahead."

Ahmet said...

(OOC: Ooh, an exorcism!

Ready... aim...)

Lukas said...

Lukas helps as needed.

Andrej said...

Andrej will depart for Innsbruck as soon as two horses are ready, laying Ahmet and the girl over one horse as best he can.

Andrej will move as quickly as safety allows with whomever else in the party decides to come.

Sofia and Hichem will begin breaking camp once Andrej is on his way.

Andrej said...

let me be more specific re: Ahmet and the girl. Andre will use rope to secure them each over the horse.

Alexis said...

You can see Innsbruck in the bottom of the valley, as I said; and with luck, you may be able to reach there in an hour.

However, since it is night, and it is downhill, there is a chance one of your horses could break a leg. There's a chance you could slip and fall and break a leg. You don't know the terrain, and there is no clear path that can be seen in the New Moon - which I will remind you that it is.

Just for your information. There's no trouble getting both Ahmet and the body secured.

Which horse do you ride, and which are they secured to?

Lukas said...

I take Magnus to come with.

No help from infravision?

How much slower and safer would it be to walk the horses?

Alexis said...

It being october, the rocks, the earth and the water between the are about the same temperature. So there's no distinctive surface difference; virtually everything is covered in the same degree of dew, so while you might tell shape, you couldn't tell that this patch of earth was muddy or loose or even too sharp for the horses's hooves.

The first danger in climbing is overconfidence. So we start with a wisdom check, to see if Lukas and Andrej are.

(OOC: I'm going to a funeral today, fellas, and I am not at work; I'll be around for awhile, and I'll keep tabs, but I have family coming anytime soon)

I hope your horse doesn't break it's leg in front of mine. Cascade effects are terrible.

(OOC: Hello, I'm working on something to determine if you kill yourselves going down the mountain. Give me a bit; I have an idea for an interesting table)

Alexis said...

Okay, I hope you're out there.

I've posted a rule idea for how to calculate the effects of this trip down the mountain. Please look at the post, 'Mountaineering,' that I've added. When we're clear on that, we'll roll dice and see the effects.

Ahmet said...

I'm glad I'm unconscious for this. ;)

Alexis said...

Andrej, please roll against your constitution, dexterity and strength.

Andrej said...

CON: 7 (made it)
DEX: 11 (made it)
STR: 5 (made it)

and the WIS check goes from 20 to 19 based on the new rule for mountaineering, so I missed that by 3.

While it is touch and go, and while clearly there are reasons not to stumble around in the dark at night, both Andrej and Lukas arrive at the south gate of Innsbruck unscathed.

There are several guards on duty, warming themselves by a fire, watching the distance. Two of them have marked you both as you approach, and see wary and interested, but not aggressive.

Your action?

Andrej said...

Is the gate closed or open?

Alexis said...

The forward gate is open. The backward gate is closed.

Andrej said...

Andrej remarks to one of the guards described as wary an interested, "My sons, we wish to enter the city. We have fallen comrades in need of a priest's healing, their time running short."

Alexis said...

"What do you have there?" asks the one guard. "Dead bodies? We cannot allow you to bring dead into the city."

Andrej said...

"Not dead, my son, but dying. They need healing which I cannot provide. Be merciful and grant us access to the city so that we may find a godly man of sufficient skill."

Alexis said...

The other guard says, "Packed like that and they're still alive? Let me have a look at them." He advances upon the horse holding the girl.

Andrej said...

Andrej intercedes "Packed like that so we could take them down the mountain safely. They are weak and near to death, my son. Please, open the gates and let us in before they expire."

Conflict?

Alexis said...

Guards don't generally like people getting in front of them.

This one puts his hand on the pommel of his sword. "What goes on here?"

Andrej said...

Andrej steps aside. "See for yourself, then."

Alexis said...

The guard will relax a little, but as he turns back towards the girl, Ahmet coughs and moans.

"That one is alive," says the first guard.

Ahmet said...

(OOC: Ahmet's moan: "Braaaains...")

Andrej said...

"Please, my sons, time is of the essence. I do not even know if a sufficiently powerful priest lives here or is willing to help... we have a slim hope as it is... could you not raise the gate for us?"

Alexis said...

Both guards now move a bit closer to Ahmet, circling the horse but not going right up to it.

"What's wrong with him? What's happened? Were you attacked by bandits?"

"I don't see any blood," says the other one.

Lukas said...

"Maybe I could fetch the priest to meet us out here if they are so disinclined to assist us?"

Lukas asks Andrej, and generally, but mainly Andrej. Lukas does not quite know what an exorcism entails nor what facilities it should require...

Alexis said...

"A priest? What do you need a priest for?"

The second guard turns from Lukas to Andrej. "I thought you were a priest."

The first guard says, "I don't like the sound of this. Remember last Hallow's Eve, particularly those last days?"

Lukas said...

"That story would probably be extremely helpful actually, but we are limited in time, and THIS priest has expended his power for the day, we need to find a sufficiently powerful priest in THERE before this man dies.

Perhaps one of you may fetch your priest and leave us at the gates?

Regardless if the priest does not come, this man will die. There is no other result."

Lukas said...

(Except perhaps zombie apocalypse)

Alexis said...

The second guard (clearly the superior of the two) moves closer to Ahmet, with the intention of looking closer - and then he is interrupted by a third guard.

This is a large, heavyset, middle-aged man with auburn hair and a thick, auburn beard. He's wearing an arming coat with the emblem of the city on it, belted at the waist; he looks unhappy.

"What's all this then?" he demands. "Let them in the gate or send them packing! Have I got to tell you your jobs?"

Andrej said...

Andrej whispers to the second guard "Say the word, my son, and we'll be within the walls and out of your view within a moment."

Alexis said...

The first guard explains everything that's happened to this new fellow - and he says to Lukas and Andrej, "Step back."

He then advances towards Ahmet.

(OOC: any last words?)

Ahmet said...

(OOC: Braaaains...)

Andrej said...

"vaya con Dios, motherfuckers" will be my last words.

Lukas said...

Lukas makes no move to stop them. If they let you die I hope they get infected with brain maggots.

Ahmet said...

(OOC: Aww... thanks Lukas!)

Alexis said...

I will assume those are not actually your last words.

The lead guard lifts up Ahmet's shoulder and looks into his face. The infection has spread quite a bit now, covering most of the fighter's head and neck.

The guard freezes.

In a very level voice, he says, "Jenner. Get Father Becker here. Get him here right now." The tone of the voice is such that the guard he's speaking to, the second guard, Jenner, goes white.

Then he takes off at high speed. He removes his sword belt, his helmet and his gauntlets as he runs.

The lead guard will say, "Don't none of you move."

He will move towards the girl.

Andrej said...

If indeed the time comes for truly "last words", they might be... but in this instance, no I do not say that to the guards. ;)

Andrej said...

Andrej does not move.

Alexis said...

The lead guard looks at the girl and says, "This girl is dead."

He draws his weapon and faces Andrej and Lukas. "What is going on here?"

Andrej said...

Andrej makes no move to draw a weapon and keeps his hands in view. "We seek a priest to perform an exorcism, both for the dead girl and for our comrade. I have reason to believe that each of them are being possessed by malignant entities. Perhaps even the same one."

Alexis said...

"Yes, I know," says the Lead; "The man is dying from the infection of the Kyussites, and Father Becker is coming to perform the exorcism you want. But HOW did she die and HOW was he infected?"

Andrej said...

"She died here in Innsbruck, yesterday as the tournament began. One of the knights lost control of his horse and the girl was struck upon the head, killed instantly. My friend here and I brought her to the nearest church, along with a towns-person whose name we do not know. Sankt-Anna was the church, but the priest residing there sent us on our way, claiming the girl was in fat some malignant entity beyond his ken. I sensed the evil as well.

Our aim was to bury the girl far from where she could harm any Innsbruck folk. This evening, though, we were set upon by a creature... the Kyussite that you spoke of, I suspect. The thing was destroyed but our friend afflicted with this infection.

It was then that I realized my mistake. An excorcism, I hope, will both free the girl's soul for its final disposition and save our friend. We rode hard and rather foolishly down the mountain to return them both to Innsbruck. That is the whole of it, guardsman."

Lukas said...

Lukas lets the expert take the lead.

Alexis said...

The guard sheaths his sword. "I see. Well, we shall let the father sort it out then. My apologies, and apologies for my guards. You can understand how this appears to threaten ... sometimes there's more to these things. But I believe you."

He gives his name as Vicente. He offers you food and blankets; though he is sorry that you must all stay outside for now.

Lukas said...

Lukas nods, "I understand and respect your decision. Mainly I am just glad now something is happening."

Ahmet said...

Ahmet attempts to die as slowly as possible.

Lukas said...

Hey, we're doing all the hard work, you get to take a nap. Besides, not dying is just a matter of not going into the light right?

Alexis said...

Ahmet sees a light.

Alexis said...

(OOC: When we pick this up, with the next post, Ahmet will have been healed by Father Becker; the girl will have been buried, with Andrej and Father Becker both in attendance, and probably someone sent to fetch Sonya and Hichem from the mountain, at first light. It takes an hour for the exorcism spell to be cast; Ahmet's skin reasserts most of itself, but he has a terrible rash the priest tells him will likely last for a week before it completely goes. We will thus pick up at 10 AM in the morning of October 26th, in the South Guard Tower of Innsbruck, where the party has been allowed to get some sleep and to eat)

Alexis said...

Before that, any questions?

Ahmet said...

Whew!

Hm... 1) how did the girl get infected, if that's what happened to her, 2) how often does this happen (fairly regularly, I would think, as the guards were so familiar with it) and 3) where's my x.p.? :)

Lukas said...

I don't think the girl ever was. I think that was something else entirely. (I think the man was involved)

Andrej said...

Aye, Lukas. The helpful townsman was very Johnny-on-the-spot and I have wondered at that these past few weeks, even rereading the passage once. Could just be he was helpful and conscientious. Could be he had a more sinister agenda.

What are Father Becker's thoughts on the nature of the "girl" and/ or her affliction? The townsman?

And to Ahmet's original question, what is the history of the town regaridng the infection of the Kyussites? What do they know about the same?

What happened last Hallow's Eve?

Alexis said...

According to Father Becker, the girl was never infected. He too was able to detect the evil in her; but he's absolutely certain that she is not, and never was undead. Something is certainly active inside her - and the good father feels she may be "attracting" undead ... but that the problem should be solved by placing her in a consecrated burial ground, surrounded by wafers and holy water.

Which he has done.

None of the guards were familiar with the kyussite disease; if anyone except Vicente had looked, you would have been labeled plague bringers and possibly the guards would have attacked you; certainly, they would have driven you off.

However, Vicente once participated in fighting on the Franco-Spanish border, where he encountered a monastery filled with them. So he knew what he was looking at.

Ahmet asks a very good question. I even calculated it, and forgot to give.

Alexis said...

Experience all around:

Ahmet, 1,211
Andrej & Lukas, 251 each
Sofia, 126

Alexis said...

The town has little or no experience with kyussites. There seems to be no overt evidence of a sinister agenda.

Last Hallow's Eve, three carts appeared at the South Gate, appearing to pull themselves - no horse, not even one that invisible or of some other nature that could be determined. They were nearly empty; each cart had three dozen human teeth rolling around in the back - exactly three dozen. The mystery was never solved.

Alexis said...

If you wish to stay in Innsbruck the day of the 26th, I need to write the next post to reflect that.

The morning is chilly, with clear conditions and a moderate breeze.

Andrej said...

What say you guys, take another day of rest or don't loose any more time getting through the Alps?

I vote we rest here and leave the 27th. Remember, Alexis does use a travel dmg system and I suspect after the night's activities we'd be susceptible to it.

Lukas said...

I would say stay the night, and in addition to a donation to the local church, I might be interested in the going rate on an augary on the Alps, I don't know if we'll make it after two days lost?

Lukas said...

Oh yes, and was that XP in addition to the previous XP?

Alexis said...

I had suspended the travel damage system months ago, for it failing to measure up the required logic. I haven't gotten back to it. Sometime this winter, I'll put it in ... in the meantime, no worries there.

Alexis said...

that was XP in addition to that which I gave after the death of the creature. I did not at that time add in the damage Ahmet took.

Andrej said...

So with travel damage off of the table the question is wait and possibly get an augury or just go. I'm leaning toward just going now that my understanding of things has been corrected.

Alexis said...

The desired tithe for a 4th level spell would be 179 g.p.

Lukas said...

Wasn't Augary the 2nd level one?

Ahmet said...

Is Ahmet fully healed? If so, I'm also leaning toward leaving now rather than spending another day here.

Alexis said...

Exorcism is 4th.

We can say that Ahmet is fully healed.

Andrej said...

So, regarding the exorcism, do we all chip in for it or does Ahmet pay himself? This will set a precedent for us.

On the one hand, its Ahmet that needed the service so one could argue its Ahmet that should pay.

On the other hand, he needed it because his job description entails being the guy that stands in front of everybody else with the sword and shield.

On the third hand, if the party is expected to share these kinds of costs one might then expect that the party has some say in how each individual character behaves, since the results of said behavior could impact all of our pocketbooks. I don't want to necessarily take a general vote each time somebody needs to fight a mummy or werewolf.

So...

I say the rule should be that the party shares these kinds of costs. We could just split them equally as they arise or start a general fund for such things that we all put into.

Your thoughts?

Ahmet said...

I didn't get a bill, so I kind'a figured it was on the house.

Another reason to quickly leave town ;)

Lukas said...

I'll pitch in if needed. To be honest I'd expect as much for any perilous situation.

BTW Ahmet, you want some cash for that holy water?

Alexis said...

Father Becker is not asking for any money for the exorcism. For the good of the town, don't you know.

Lukas said...

Well I'm going to pitch in 70g.

Alexis said...

Shall I start the next post?

Ahmet said...

Obviously I'll pay whatever's left over.

Ready for the next post.

However...

I'm curious as to what Ahmet experienced (or what he thinks he experienced, anyway). Did he wake up remembering he had been battling for his soul? Did he see his father, brothers, and innumerable cousins in the hereafter? Did he quiz the Archangel Gabriel about mining practices in heaven?

Or was it all a big blank?

Lukas said...

Sorry Ahmet, I meant Andrej about the holy water.

Ahmet said...

(OOC: By the way... I need less than 1,000 x.p. to reach 5th level. Let's go kill something!)

Lukas said...

(OOC: Indeed, I'm right there too...)

Lukas said...

I'm also technically ready for the next post. I already put forwards my 70g and deducted it from my funds.

My only outstanding question is, if we stay, can I get one augury (cost deducted from my 70g to double check times on making the pass)

Alexis said...

(OOC: I'm afraid it was all a big blank)

Gonna update the campaign with a post. Look for it around 4:10 EST.
