Tower Crown Round 6: Fire in the Hole

As the three opponents drop to the ground, slept by Lukas' spell, the fellow in the doorway will shout, "FIRE IN THE HOLE!!!"  The men give a last push to the orb, and it begins rolling down the tracks - very, very slowly at first, then faster (though it ought to drop at gravity's bequest, it just doesn't).

Pink doesn't give a glance.  He doesn't hesitate.  He rushes directly at the machine to throw himself under it.

The members of the party will have to roll a d20.  Until that happens, no action is possible.

(OOC: Ahmet, assuming that was one of either an ability check or a saving throw one of us is probably fucked)

(OOC: Maybe it was an anti-bell curve roll, where the worst results are between 5-15!)

I must apologise profusely, fellas. I've been having some absurd computer issues on my end that are causing all sorts of unnecessary problems around here. I tried to check in whenever I could this week, but things have been one hell of a mess. I'm cautiously optimistic that everything's been straightened out, though I wish I could have said as much before I went and missed an entire combat round. (Not that I can fault you judgement, Alexis; I'm truly sorry I couldn't give you any indication of what was going on.)

The moment the orb falls into the central fire, there is an air shattering boom. It is the same boom you experienced earlier, in the stairs leading up to the tower. The air flows into the glowing fire; it seems to create a vacuum outside the contraption, extending down into the tower and (probably) outward into space in every direction. Then the energy of the device is concentrated on the near-invisible projectile at the front; the projectile glows white hot, becoming impossible to see ... and then it fires from the device at the earth, to a place unseen.

It must be admitted that this is a unique sight, never before seen, and that it must have some effect of awe upon persons unfamiliar with it. Mr. Green throws himself UNDER the device. Those in the doorway above the device drop into the recesses of whatever is behind the door.

Ahmet, perhaps due to his natural lack of curiousity, sees Mr. Green's action and does the same (succeeds wisdom check, at -4 modifier). The other three party members, Andrej, Lukas and Janos, all stare if wonder a bit too long (wisdoms all temporarily reduced by 4, checks failed).

The outward shock from the device, AFTER the missile is fired, ripples through the air and shakes the very stones of the tower, bound together with steel. Andrej suffers 5 damage; Lukas suffers 6; and Janos, perhaps because of his training as a ranger, drops at the last moment and takes only 1 damage.

Andrej, though stunned, is merely buffetted against the outer wall of the tower. Janos isn't stunned ... he simply rides out the wave. Lukas IS stunned ... and that the top of the ladder. He must roll a d20, and he must roll it well.

(OOC: Gentlemen.

I am now on vacation. It is my intention today to write 4,000 words. I am chasing a deadline for a book I'm finishing, and that was part of my intention of taking the whole month of June off. But here it is the 11th and I'm still playing the game.

I am, at present, 72,000 words into the third draft of the novel. The previous draft is 110,000 words, and I am agreed with other parties to complete it by the end of June, edited, fixed and ready for publication. An editor is diligently a few chapters behind me at the moment, fixing what I miss.

Please understand that this takes precedence; I love the game and all, but ... well, you can guess.

Where I'm relaxed and such, I'll play some game here. The rest of the time I'll be otherwise occupied.

Be well you crazy guys)

Lukas rolls a 9 (Just to get this out of the way for when the time comes)

(OOC: Have a good vacation!)

(OOC: Good morning!

Now, you fellows know what it's like to come back to a technical job after a week's vacation; I've got two meetings with people who covered my ass while I was gone, and a mess of emails to get through, plus catchup nonsense. But I am here. I am adamant that I will get something of value up here today, just for my own happiness and satisfaction, so bear with me and keep an eye out. Hope you haven't all run for the hills.

Talk later today)

Standing by.

(OOC: Sorry, its just frustrating. I'm watching my day just roll out the door; hope you guys can forgive me. I'll have to try tomorrow)

(OOC: Hey, I was expecting no game until the end of June, so I'm happy with whatever we can get!)

Alexis said...

(OOC: I hope so. Because you may have to wait until the end of June)

If I may make a suggestion, perhaps we should just decide to convene at some future date and stick with that, so that all five of us may plan for it. Reason being, Alexis you are are clearly busy these days and starting next week I'll be pretty much unavailable to play until about July 9th. In the meantime, only Butch and I seem to have been lately checking in (Sorry if that's not the case Lukas and Janos).

If instead of catch-as-catch-can and mostly missing, we pick a date (ideally after the 9th for me) and announce via e-mail and here on the blog we have a chance to plan for playing, hit the ground running that day perhaps reacquire some lost momentum.

Thoughts?

Ahmet said...

(OOC: I can do that if it's easier for everyone. I should more or less be around either way.)

Alexis said...

I am perfectly good with the 9th of July. I'll have the book done by then, and things should get more loose here at work as summer commences and as I'm doing less daily training of new workers.

Lukas said...

I've been lurking is all. I have no problem with a bit of a wait.

James C. said...

Then pending Janos's input it looks like we're set for the 9th. I'll pop in every now and then in the meantime as I can.

Have a good couple of weeks folks, let's try not to get ourselves killed on the tower crown when we get back. :)

János said...

The 9th sounds just fine by me as well.

Alexis said...

Good. Thanks guys for being so patient. Enjoy the first part of your summer.

Lukas said...

The best part will be when we return in time to witness Lukas' fall to his death.

James C. said...

(OOC: I'm baaaaaaaack! I hope all is well with you guys and that we're all ready to kick this tower in the ass.)

(OOC: I'm back as well)

Lukas! You're FINE. You fall backwards, steady yourself against the wall and DO NOT fall down the ladder.

When the action ensues ...

The party will hear an enormous distant boom, delayed from the moment the "stinger" fired; there will be plenty of time for the party to recover. Mr. Red, Mr. Green and Mr. Yellow will find their feet again, backing up a hex each. Amhet, who made his wisdom check, will be on the ground (he can jump up to) and sees Mr. Pink scurrying under the machine towards 0402.

There are noises coming from the levitated door - but whoever is inside is still recovering.

I am setting up the next map now.

Alexis said...

(oh ... there's been time for Lukas to move, and for Klaas to come onto the top level)

The next post is up.
