Kobalds Round 10: A Lull

The party sorts itself out while standing on a carpet of dead kobald bodies.  Ermeth attacks the kobald above him, hits it twice and kills it, then backs down the stairs before he can be riddled again with arrows.  Since Andrej is out of moves, and a planned pyramid is collapsed, Ahmet finds the only place he can go is in the hex with Warth (he will have to switch next time with Andrej, as Ermeth has taken that place).

The remaining dwarves swarm up onto the orange level, where the space gets fairly tight.

Culf and Nerga, who have room, each hurl an axe (Nerga hurls the one that he finds on the ground under his feet).  They manage to kill both kobalds in hex 3008.

The line of sight on the higher cave has been temporarily lost.

The kobalds DO NOT fight back.  The one kobald in 3109 draws back, and a temporary stand-off commences.  The party can hear the rattling and shouting of kobalds up and beyond the ledge.

(OOC: Looking at the map, I should make a rule that moving through a hex with dead bodies in it should require a dex check not to stumble, or slip in the blood)

Well, we can't just wait here...

Ahmet rushes up the stairs, hoping his plate and large shield will protect him somewhat.

"They have not fired their arrows, yet, they await our charge. We must press the advantage while we have it, though and not let them re-organize."

"Ahmet, I can cast an aid spell upon you... (2d4+4 temporary hit points, also helps prevent stunning by giving more hit points, +1 to hit as well)... and you can lead the charge up the stairs and between your armor and my magic hopefully take the next volley of arrows wihtout much pain. I will go up on the pyramid should Warth deign to form another or, be second behind you up the stairs."

(OOC: I almost feel sorry for the little guys, Alexis. I hope that sympathy is not short-lived.) ;)

Lukas debates climbing the hut in front of himself, as its probably a space best suited for a ranged combatant, but not yet. He'll wait till after Ahmet goes up.

(OOC: Insert Indiana Jones boulder comes rolling down stairs...)

I suppose we could wait until the Dwarves are formed up and ready to go over as well. That way I'm not the ONLY target.

Andrej casts Aid.

2d4+4: 10 hit points for Ahmet

Ahmet, if you're not currently at full I recommend you try to get close to it by using a salve so the 10 hit points are all "bonus". They'll last 10 rounds.

Don't forget the +1 to hit for 10 rounds.

Alexis, once done casting Andrej either acts as the top for a pyramid or makes ready to follow Ahmet.

Ahmet has already declared he is running up the stairs. I consider this action to have already happened, as Ahmet has stated that it happened. Thus, Andrej cannot ask him the question that he asked, because Ahmet is not there. Moreover, Ahmet cannot question his action and wait for the dwarves - he's already done it.

Moreover, Andrej cannot ask the question this round AND cast the spell. But I will rule that since Ahmet is not there to be asked, Andrej CAN cast the spell - but the effects of the spell cannot be known at this time, and can certainly not be bestowed on anyone until the NEXT round - and certainly not on Ahmet, because Ahmet is gone.

Thus, the numbers generated are useless at this time. The numbers should not be generated until the next round. Andrej does not need to tell me what he does after he casts until the next round, either.

Lukas does not have to wait.

(OOC: 31 hours awake and counting)

Andrej casts the spell provided he can bestow it upon himself if Ahmet is not at hand when it can be bestowed.

Alexis said...

Once the spell is cast, Andrej can decide at that time who to bestow it upon.

Remember that "casting" is not "discharging" - the two are linked only in that the one must be done before the other. If you load the gun, you need not decide who to shoot until after the gun is loaded.

Thus, in casting the spell, you leave yourself with options.

But it must be remembered - you cannot talk or explain the spell to someone else during the casting or any time between it's having been casted and it's having been discharged. Andrej is concentrating, and cannot speak while concentrating.

My primary concern is that you have chosen to cast the spell while standing in front of the stairs which Ahmet (and probably others) will be rushing up. The chances of someone bumping into you (and thus spoiling the casting by breaking your concentration) is about 100%.

I know that this is not something you've considered, but it is something a cleric would have had drilled into his head as a student. So we must assume that you stepped aside before casting the spell.

Once Lukas sees Ahmet rush up, he climbs the hut to see if he can see any enemies from four feet higher.

I hope I can find something to bash while I'm up there. :)

I'll be around this afternoon and evening but not tomorrow.

For the sake of accuracy and posterity I had actually decided to cast and announced such when I didn't think there was any "rushing up" to be done yet. Otherwise, I may have considered it, though wouldn't have assumed a 100% chance of failure, so that is good information to have. Regardless, I accept things as you describe without complaint.

I don't mean to be ornery. It is only that with backpacks and weapons and blood all over the floor and jostling around each other on their way up the stairs, each has a chance of knocking Andrej.

It is always a good idea not to cast a spell in a traffic area.

(OOC: I am going home to sleep now. Please be well. Ahmet, sorry you won't be around - but the combat will occur around you. It will take you all your movement to get up the stairs, so when you're able to check back in, it will probably be to find out if its possible for a kobald to hit you)

Ahmet said...

(OOC: No problem. Just assume that as long as Ahmet is upright, he is trying to hack or slash something!)

Andrej said...

No worries Alexis. With Ahmet moving through my hex and possibly a gaggle of dwarves as well its reasonable to me that some disruption of the spell is likely. Rest up.

Alexis said...

Ahmet may or may not remember - because of the tiny steps on the stairs, it requires two moves to pass through hex 3009. That means Ahmet spends 1 mp in 2909, and 2 mp in 3009. That sums up his whole move.

Nerga will wind up entering the same hex, as he is rushing on Ahmet's heels.
