Jitters Before the Fight

This is a post designed to allow for further discussion prior to tackling the next room in the dungeon, which appears to contain kobalds.  Nothing is substantially changed from the contents of the last post.

If Frith has an idea on how to use the silence spell, I'm all ears.

I'm fine with Ahmet in the front if that's what he wants to do.

Andrej will bring up the rear of the zipper column and make a decision on which way to turn or whether to stay in the tunnel based on what's going on.

A decisive application of reserves can be the turning point of a battle. I'm not comfortable committing all of our forces at once not knowing what's in the room, but they're Frith's men and women to command.

Frith: "If the silence spell creates a bubble through which no sound can pass, then the whole column's sound of tramping forward will be concealed, since the tunnel is only 5' wide; even those no inside the silence spell will thus be hidden - and we may gain surprise if we can enter the room and attack before there's a proper response."

Frith agrees with Andrej that it is an enormous risk, not seeing what else there is in the room. But he has no means of gaining further intelligence without perhaps sacrificing one or two men to no purpose. He's not willing to do this.

We were given 10 flasks of oil as part of our supplies at the war camp.

Ahmet said...

Ahmet would prefer to be in the front. If the oil flasks are to be hurled left, he'll go right, or vice versa. "Hurl fire at one side, and me at the other!"

Alexis said...

With permission, Frith will ask for three flasks of oil.

Andrej said...

Now we've got a plan.

Three flasks for Frith. Andrej will take three as well (I can use flaming oil, yes?). Three for Lukas and an extra?

How about Andrej and Lukas will follow the column up and toss flasks onto the top of the hut slope as necessary once the dwarves are into the room. I'm actually pretty good at this (+1 to hit/ +3 to make it break)

Consider the silence spell cast upon a stone and handed to Frith at the appropriate time.

I understand Frith's desire not to send dwarves in by two and three, but would have preferred we divide into thirds or fourths, leaving a 3rd or 4th in reserve. I'm OK with Lukas and Andrej and flaming flasks of oil being the reserve instead if all others agree.

Alexis said...

This suits Frith.

Andrej said...

If all is well with the others, we wait out the remaining two hours and then form up and Andrej casts his spell upon a rock for Frith.

Andrej said...

Anybody have a torch?

Lukas said...

I only have a tinderbox. Many things went un-bought due to low starting funds.

Alexis said...

Ermeth has a torch.

Alexis said...

Warth suggests that the party douse their lanterns before entering and brought in by the end column. As the room beyond is lit, lanterns will not be needed.

Andrej said...

We will need lit torches to light the oil, shall we carry these at the rear of the column? If so, How will Frith light his?

Alexis said...

Frith with light his with a torch. If a torch is dropped during combat, no expense; but lantern glass gets smashed and lanterns are expensive.

Alexis said...

I've added an image to the post which suggests the lineup of dwarves and party suggested - if I'm right. Please review.

Ahmet said...

I don't think we should use ALL the oil. We will need some for lanterns, no? Unless we think we're near the end of our underground adventure.

Ahmet said...

Regarding the lineup, Ahmet wants to go in first. He has a large shield which will help defend against missile fire.

Alexis said...

Frith takes Ahmet aside.

"I appreciate this offer, good fighter; but I lead these men. These men follow me. They must see me as their LEADER - I cannot hand that leadership over to another. Moreover, you have expressed a desire not to attack the left side; My men are positioned to attack the left side - Warth's men, the right. Those men follow him as they follow me; he must be seen as the leader.

Please do not challenge this leadership, my friend. Armies require these presentations."

Ahmet said...

Ahmet claps Frith on the shoulder. "Very well. Just save some kobolds for me, eh?"

Alexis said...

"Let us hope there are not more than enough," Frith answers.

Andrej said...

Lineup looks good to me. Will Klaas be joining us or is he just there for moral support ;).

Andrej said...

One last detail, once the Silence is cast upon the stone and this handed up to Frith, Andrej will shoulder his shield and place his mace in his belt. In his right hand he carries an oil flask with a cloth jammed into it and in his left he carries the torch. Another two flasks with cloth jammed into them are in his belt pouch (Previous contents of pouch shifted to his backpack) and the remaining two oil flasks in his backpack as well.

Alexis said...

Frith will be dispensing his flasks among himself, Odval and Batath (Palt broke his finger), and they prepare the flasks similarly.

Klaas is bringing up the rear for porter support.

Alexis said...

I know Lukas is sick; I hope he can concur as well.

Here's my intention, then; I will represent the front of the party as running into the room ahead, up to the point where the kobald (remember, only one is confirmed) has to roll surprise.

I will show as much of the room as can be seen once the party has rushed in.

The rush, due to the last turn of the tunnel, will not allow anyone to be moving at faster than normal speed.

Once committed, the party IS committed - so if you want to move into the room slower, let me know - but Frith wants to cover as much ground between him and that kobald as he can before anyone has a chance for surprise.

The chance of the kobald being surprised is definitely improved by the silence spell, but the kobald will still be able to SEE.

Are there any problems that anyone has with this proposal.

Andrej said...

Nope. Let's roll.

Ahmet said...

No problems. Sounds good to me.

Ahmet has his large shield on his left arm and a dagger in his right hand, ready to hurl it at the first kobold he sees that isn't already on fire.

Andrej said...

Remember to keep moving once you hit the room, Ahmet. We don't want to be stuck in the tunnel too long if we can help it.

Alexis said...

"Remember," says Frith; "Your accuracy with a Polish bomb is only good to fifteen feet; throw it from too far out and it won't break or hit on target - so try to get close before you throw it."

Lukas said...

Sorry, I'm good with this plan. I'll stow the darts from my belt and replace them with any oil I have. I'll have one dart in hand on approach.

Alexis said...

There is an issue that's just occurred to me.

If Andrej casts the silence spell, how long does it take to hand the stone over to Frith and at the same time allow Andrej to get all the way to the back of the line. How long does the silence spell last?

Ahmet said...

I'm sure we could work out a "pass it to the guy in front of you" system to quickly get the stone to the front of the line...

Alexis said...

Yes, I thought of that; I figure that would take about a second a person, or about a round - call it two as Frith puts it somewhere safe on his person.

I meant to look up the spell duration last night; but forgot.

I'll be putting up the battle in about five-ten minutes.

Andrej said...

Spell lasts 8 rounds for me.
